When we came up with the idea of introducing a $2.4m Inglis Triple Crown bonus a few years ago, we had no expectation that an Inglis graduate would qualify in the first year. After winning the Inglis Nursery in 2012 and the VRC Sires Produce in 2013, Twilight Royale has indeed qualified and will line up this Saturday in the Inglis Guineas in Scone. If she wins, her connections will collect $240,950 for first place and a bonus of $2,400,000 from Inglis. She will also pick up a $20,000 BOBs bonus. That's $2,660,950 if my maths are correct, which will be the second highest winning purse after the Melbourne Cup in Australia this year, and a new world record for a non metro racing meeting. It will be the highest ever winning purse paid out in NSW by my records.
Can she win? Recent form has not been the best but her trainer Bjorn Baker knows what he is doing and is well aware that the lead up races over the past month were not the grand final. Bjorn purchased Twilght Royale from the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in 2012 for $45,000, and with help from Trainer Connections and Bloodstock.com.au has assembled a team of lucky and enthusiastic owners. The filly has drawn barrier 16 just to make the task more challenging, but I wish the connections all the best. If she wins, history will be made in Scone this Saturday, and Bjorn Baker and the owners of this filly will have plenty to spend at the Scone Yearling Sale on Sunday. Only problem will be getting them to the sale on time, I fear they will use the opportunity to shoot part 3 of the Hangover series if the opportunity presents. Good luck boys.
If there is a lesson to be learnt here, make sure you pay up for the Inglis Race Series if you purchased a yearling from an Inglis yearling sale this year or have one in your stable. Passed in horses can also be paid up. All the details at http://inglis.com.au/2014-race-series
